You Might Be Cocooning If…

popcorn“Everybody is nervous, really nervous.  I think we are looking for protection.  Almost like the Jetsons, we want to walk around in  a little bubble.  We are moving toward that.”  So says Faith Popcorn who coined the phrase “cocooning” in 1981 and now feels there is a new level of super-cocooning.

Cocooning in the 1980s was caused by a mix of fear and fun.  It was a trend identified with the Cold War uncertainty and led to say at home entertainment such as the first home video game systems, recreation rooms and swimming pools and trampolines in the backyard.

Are You Cocooning?  Here ‘s a List of Questions to Ask Yourself:

  1. Check your credit card transactions.  Are you spending more this year on major electronics like TVs and tablets than you did in the past?
  2. Have you remodeled your kitchen so you can spend more time with friends in your own home?
  3. Do you eat out less and spend more time with your family cooking meals in that remodeled kitchen?
  4. Do you spend close to $300 per month on pay TV, internet service, video games, on-demand video, music, books and magazines?
  5. Do you travel less than you used to and prefer to have “stay-cations”?
  6. Do you find yourself wanting larger and larger TV’s and surround sound systems?
  7. Do you prefer to watch sports on your giant screen TV than brave the hordes at the ballpark?
  8. Do you do most of your shopping online and have it delivered?

If you answered yes to most of these questions, you are probably cocooning.

“We don’t feel too safe, and people are getting more and more nervous about being vulnerable.  Cocooning is going strong in 2013,” stated Faith Popcorn.
