Naples Triathlon 2013

sunriseThe sun was rising as I entered the transition area on Sunday June 2, 2013 at 6am to set up my equipment for the annual Naples Triathlon.  The Naples Triathlon is called a reverse triathlon because the order of events is run 5k, bike 10 miles and swim a quarter mile.  The normal Triathlon starts with the swim, then the bike and finally the run.  As these distances are shorter than normal this is called a Sprint Triathlon.

The weather was wonderful although everyone was concerned that we would have a storm during the race as it has been very stormy in Naples the past week.  There were no storms and the day was dry except for a few rain sprinkles just before the run began.tri 6

All of the race activity takes place at the Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club.  The 5k (3.2 mile) race starts about 2 blocks south of the Beach Club and winds through quiet streets to US 41 and back to the Beach Club.  Then there is the mad dash into the transition area to change equipment and run the bike out to the starting area.tri photo 3

The bike route is up Gulf Shore tri 7Dr to Crayton Road and then through the Venetian Village area back to the Beach Club and a careful dismount.  No wind during the ride this year so I was able to make excellent time.

The final leg is the swim and after dropping my bike back in transition it was a long run across the street, through the beach access and onto the beach into the Gulf.  The water was warm and reasonably calm for the quarter mile swim.  The swim is usually the part that most people like the least and swimming in the gulf is never easy but at last it was done and time for the run up onto the beach and through the finish line.

Every participant receives a medal for finishing and there are awards given three deep in each age group.  Unfortunately I didn’t win an age group award but did win the feeling of a great accomplishment finishing my second Naples Triathlon! tri 4
