Naples Florida Downtown – Old Naples

The downtown area of Naples Florida has long been fondly referred to as “Old Naples”.  This area encompasses the 5th_Avenue__Naples(3)shops and restaurants of 5th Avenue South and 3rd St South and has always been of the most loved tourist areas in our sunny and “toasty” town.3rd st

Why The “Old Naples” Sobriquet?

Winter visitors have been chasing the sun to Naples Florida since the early 1930’s.  Even then there was a small golf course located at the end of 5th Avenue and, of course, we have always had the beautiful weather and the wonderful beaches to enjoy.  In 1932 Charles Lindbergh landed his plane on 5th Avenue and he and his wife had a retreat on Sanibel Island and purchased their supplies in Naples.

There were very few businesses on 5th Avenue South at that time although Naples did boast a train depot where the Orange Blossom Special blew its whistle each day at noon as it arrived at the station.  A liquor store, gas station, dry goods store and telephone company were the only other buildings on the now very busy street.

In 1918 the first road from Naples to Fort Myers was completed and was made of shells in deep mud ruts.  Today old naplesthis road is known as the Tamiami Trail North.  Before this road to get to Miami from Naples you would travel north to Jacksonville and then south to Miami.  Quite a circuitous way to reach a destination less than 100 miles away!

What To See Today

Things have certainly changed from those early days of downtown Naples.  However, the brilliant sunsets from the peir_naples_8fldend of 5th Avenue South or the end of the Naples Pier are still as beautiful as they always were and should not be missed.  Plenty of amazing dining is available on both 5th Avenue South and 3rd Street South.  Any palate will be pleased with the choices from Tuscan to pizza and hot dogs!  Of course we could not forget the ice cream to be enjoyed while walking along people watching!
