May 2016 – What to Do in Naples Florida

naplesgrandeSeason is finally winding down and our snowbirds are packing up and heading home leaving us to our quiet and humid summer.  Bored you say?  How can you be?  There is still lots of things happening in the Naples area to keep you busy.  Don’t forget the main thing; the gulf water is now warming up into the high 70s and will soon be hitting the 80s!  That’s the perfect time for us Naples full time residents to hit the beach and enjoy the water before it gets too hot in the summer months.  So this month beach visiting is the number one activity for me but there are other events to enjoy if the beach is not your thing.

Taste of Collier:  Sunday May 1, 2016 The Shoppes at Vanderbilt.  Around since 1983 this event grows each year.  It was originally started by the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association to express gratitude to the year round residents who patronize local restaurants.  There is a $5 entrance fee and you can purchase tickets 10 for $10 that allow you to purchase the food samples offered by the numerous restaurants who bring their wares to showcase at this event.  This year 30 of the best local restaurants will be participating.  This is a chance for you to sample the food of the restaurants you have been thinking of trying but not made it to yet!

Great Dock Canoe Race: Another great Naples tradition is held this month.  May 14 11am to 2pm enjoy the Dock canoe race.  This is the 40th annual event and takes place at Naples City Dock offering spectacular fun for the whole family.  The theme this year is “Last Dance” as this will the final year for the canoe races.  Come out and enjoy the spectacle; if you don’t see it this year you won’t be able to see it next year!

067Evening on 5th:  Evening on 5th Avenue is held the first Thursday of every month and this month coincides with Cinco de Mayo.  This promises to be a spirited and lively event for the whole family to enjoy.  I took this picture of 5th Avenue one July day a couple of years ago.  Soon our 5th Avenue will look this empty again as the tourists go back north and leave our paradise to us!

Remember it is always toasty in Naples and you deserve your piece of Naples sunshine.  Although not as many, there will be events going on in Naples all summer so make sure to visit each month and see what is happening. You don’t want to miss the excitement!
